Yuki quits singles, eyes success in doubles

Yuki Bhambri has retired from singles tennis to focus on doubles. The 28-year-old Yuki, once considered a contender to break into the top 50, is the second Indian player after Sania Mirza to quit singles to extend her tennis career. Troubled by injuries, Yuki had already made up his mind that he would now play only doubles. Talking to PTI, he said, “I tried my best in my solo career and I have no regrets. Maybe I just had bad luck, things were wrong.

I don’t know. I have no regrets and I could not have done more. “It’s because of injuries, not because of lack of sponsors,” he said. Even without sponsors, I have done well and will continue to do so, but injuries have had a huge impact. I was playing some singles matches like last year. I returned in 2021 as well and played first two three tournaments and then went to America. There was a corona infection and then I got hurt. Asked what she likes about doubles, Yuki said, “It is a very fast paced game. Within two minutes the whole match changes. You have to give your best performance. The workload is also different but physically it is not as exhausting as solo.
